Naseem Banu Lahri is a seasoned Executive Leader with over 18 years of transformative experience in the mining industry. Holding a Master’s in Strategic Management (BCOM, FCCA), she has redefined corporate responsibility through her visionary leadership in Botswana, transcending traditional Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) models that often prioritise superficial chequebook philanthropy. Instead, Lahri has pioneered a deeply integrated approach to community upliftment, ensuring that Lucara Botswana’s operations leave a lasting, sustainable legacy for mining communities.

Appointed Managing Director of Lucara Botswana in May 2018, Lahri shattered barriers as the first woman, first Motswana woman, and youngest female MD globally to lead a diamond mining company. Her tenure has been defined by a commitment to embedding social impact at the core of business strategy. Under her leadership, Lucara Botswana has moved beyond token CSR initiatives to drive tangible, systemic change. She spearheaded sustainable development projects that prioritise long-term community empowerment, including infrastructure development, clean water access, and renewable energy programs tailored to local needs.

A champion of gender equity, Lahri has revolutionised opportunities for women in Botswana’s mining sector and beyond. She launched initiatives to uplift and empower women through vocational training, leadership programs, and entrepreneurship grants, directly addressing economic disparities. Her focus on education has transformed outcomes for women and children, with investments in STEM scholarships, school renovations, and digital literacy programs. Recognising the intersection of gender-based violence (GBV) and economic marginalisation, Lahri implemented workplace policies and partnerships to combat GBV, including safe reporting mechanisms, survivor support networks, and advocacy campaigns that challenge societal norms.

Lahri’s board roles—including positions at the Debswana Pension Fund, Botswana Accountancy College, Pula Medical Aid, and First National Bank Botswana—reflect her dedication to governance that aligns profit with purpose. Her strategic vision earned her global acclaim: Forbes, The New Yorker, and Vogue hailed her as a trailblazer, while accolades such as the 2020 Top 100 Women in Mining, 2022 Forbes Woman Africa Impact Award, and 2023 African Mining Personality of the Year underscore her transformative impact. In 2024, she was honoured as African Female Leader of the Year and completed Harvard Business School’s Senior Executive Program—Africa, further cementing her expertise in ethical leadership.
